Vintage Glamour, Playfulness & Permission to Be Seen

There’s something magical about stepping into another era for a few hours.

The pearls come out. The red lipstick goes on. A feather finds its way into your hair. Suddenly, you’re not thinking about errands, emails, laundry, work, or everything waiting for you tomorrow.

For a little while, you get to play.

That is one of the things I have always loved about pin-up photography.

A pin-up session can certainly give you beautiful photographs, but the experience is about so much more than posing for a camera. It gives you permission to explore your personality, femininity, confidence, and maybe even a side of yourself you haven't let out in years.

This Roaring ’20s-inspired session is a perfect example.

It Starts With a Little Imagination

Look at the details in this portrait.

The finger waves. The feathered headband. The pearls. The red lips. The black dress.

Each piece helps tell the story.

One of the most enjoyable parts of planning a pin-up session is deciding who you want to be in front of the camera.

Maybe you love the glamour of the 1920s.

Maybe you're a 1940s Hollywood woman at heart.

Perhaps it's the classic 1950s pin-up look with victory rolls, bright lipstick, and a fabulous dress.

Or maybe you want something inspired by old cars, cowgirls, rockabilly style, or vintage Americana.

There aren't many opportunities in everyday life to say, "Today, I think I'll become a glamorous flapper."

Photography gives us one.

And I think grown women need more opportunities to play.

You Don't Have to Know How to Pose

One of the things I hear from women all the time is:

"But Krisleen, I wouldn't know what to do!"

Good. You don't need to.

That's my job.

You don't have to arrive knowing where to put your hands, how to sit, which direction to turn your face, or how to create a pin-up expression. I'll guide you.

Sometimes we'll create a more polished pose. Sometimes we'll exaggerate something because that's part of the fun of pin-up. And sometimes the best photograph happens between the poses when you start laughing.

The goal isn't for you to perform perfectly for my camera.

It's for you to become comfortable enough that your personality begins showing up in the photographs.

There Is No Age Limit on Glamour

This is something I wish more women believed.

At some point, women begin receiving messages—sometimes subtle and sometimes not—that certain things are no longer "for us."

We're too old for that outfit.

Too old for glamorous photographs.

Too old to be playful. Too old to dress up. Too old to feel sexy. Too old to be the center of attention.

Says who?

You don't age out of femininity. You don't age out of confidence.

And you certainly don't age out of having fun.

In fact, there can be something wonderfully freeing about being photographed later in life.

You know more. You've lived more.

You've survived things your younger self couldn't have imagined.

Maybe you're also a little less interested in asking permission.

I love photographing that woman.

And Then This Happens...

This photograph is one of the reasons I love what I do.

Look at that smile.

It's not about the perfect pose anymore.

She's having fun.

There is a moment during many sessions when a woman stops thinking so much about being photographed.

She stops wondering:

Does my stomach look okay? What is my arm doing?

Is this my good side? Do I look silly?

And she simply becomes present.

She laughs. She moves. She plays.

And that's often when I see her.

Not the woman trying to take a good photograph.

The actual woman.

Those are the moments I want to capture.

Pin-Up Isn't About Pretending to Be Someone Else

This might sound funny after I've spent an entire blog talking about dressing up like you're living in another decade.

But pin-up isn't really about becoming somebody else.

It's about giving yourself permission to explore pieces of you.

Maybe the glamorous woman is you.

Maybe the playful woman is you.

Maybe the woman with the mischievous smile is you.

Maybe the confident woman looking straight into my camera has always been there—she just doesn't get invited out very often.

Clothing, makeup, props, vintage styling, and photography give us a wonderful excuse to bring her forward.

And when the session ends and the pearls come off, you don't have to leave all of her behind.

You get to take her home with you.

What Would Your Pin-Up Story Look Like?

That's the question I want to leave you with.

If you could choose any era, any look, and any version of yourself for a photography session, what would you choose?

Would you be a glamorous 1920s flapper?

A 1940s Hollywood starlet?

A sassy 1950s pin-up?

A vintage cowgirl?

Would we bring out one of the classic cars?

Or would we create something completely unexpected?

You don't need to have every detail figured out before contacting me. That's part of the creative process, and it's something we can plan together.

Most importantly, you don't need to wait until you're younger, thinner, more confident, or somehow more "ready."
